Tinctures

Tinctures are one of the best ways to distribute Cannabis into the body. Tinctures are made by combining fresh Cannabis flowers with alcohol or oils and heating them gently. As a result, they are extremely easy to make and administer. Just a few drops under the tongue for 30 seconds is all it takes. Lastly, you can expect benefits to take effect within 5 to 15 minutes.

At SacredMeds we offer a variety of oil-based tinctures to help you find the experience that best suits your needs.

What are Tinctures?

Tinctures are the oldest form of Cannabis extracts, and are sometimes referred to as “The Green Dragon”. They contain a wide variety of Cannabinoids, and are generally taken orally, either under the tongue or mixed with a beverage or food. In most cases, Tinctures come in glass bottles with droppers for convenient use and dosage measurement.

Some Cannabis users prefer tinctures rather than edibles for their lack of calories, and for their faster acting effects. Unlike edibles that are absorbed through the digestive tract, Tinctures can be taken sublingually. This means that they are absorbed directly into the blood stream, taking effect within minutes. When mixing with food or drinks, expect to see effects closer to one hour after ingestion.

Modern day tinctures are made up of two main ingredients, one active and one in-active. In this case, the active ingredient is the Cannabis extract. The inactive base material will be a healthy oil, usually MTC. Diluting the extract with the oils helps maintain consistency and potency.

Because of their basic method of preparation, Tinctures often retain a high volume of Cannabinoids, Terpenes and Flavonoids. As a result, many are considered “Full Spectrum”. A Full Spectrum extract refers to any Cannabis product that retains all of the Cannabinoids during extraction. These Full Spectrum extracts take advantage of the Entourage Effect, a process by which different Cannabinoids assist each other in providing the strongest effects.

The History of Tinctures

You can trace the use of tinctures back to the ancient Egyptians around the 10th century. It was at this time that the Egyptians first started distilling alcohol. Once distillation became a common practice, its processes began to be utilized in the creation of plant-based medicines. The Egyptians would prescribe Cannabis for glaucoma and to those suffering from problems with vision.

The first recording of Tinctures being used in Western Medicine came in a Medical Journal published in 1843. The Journal included a recipe for making Tinctures, one that was quickly duplicated by apothecaries and medicine producers alike. Less than a decade later in 1851, Cannabis Tinctures appeared in the United States Pharmacopea, an almanac listing medicinal drug uses and their effects.

At this time, Tinctures were the most popular form of using Cannabis. In fact, Cannabis Tinctures were readily available in pharmacies across the country until the start of Prohibition. In the United States, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 outlawed the use of Cannabis in any form, and it was removed from the Pharmacopea by 1941.
